Wondering where to stay in Cuba on a budget? Here are 5 youth hostels in Cuba we enjoyed staying in.
(Lealtad 206, Entre Virtudes y Concordia, Havana)
This hostel is located in the centre of Havana (Centro Habana) area and is a fully restored colonial house that has been converted into a hostel.
The Casa Miriam Hostal Colonial provides views of the harbour and offers its guests access to amenities like a television and breakfast service.
A great location in terms of location and for getting to and from the main railway station, the university and other popular attractions and locations.
There is a bakery directly opposite which is great for breakfast and for quick snacks.
(Calle Oficios 53 Esq.
The Hostal Valencia is located near the oldest part of Havana and is an old, 18th-century house that has been converted into a hostel.
This building was once the home of the Sotolongo family and is located very close to the Weapons Square and the San Francisco Convent.
The hotel has its own bar which is handy for meeting other travellers.
(Calle Santa Teresa (290 ), Numero 6701, Matanza)
This hostel is located in the city of Matanza and is just a 15-minute drive from Varadero airport.
It offers guests rooms equipped with the necessary amenities at very low prices, although it tends to get almost fully booked well in advance.
Very popular with independent travellers, with very friendly hosts, good food and just a great overall place to stay.
My favourite option!
Every year, Cuba receives thousands of backpackers who are looking to have a budget holiday and staying in a youth hostel is one of the best ways to address this concern.
There are a number of places to stay in Cuba that are suitable for backpackers and even if they are not what we would traditionally call a youth or backpackers hostel, the price and facilities I consider the closest and best option.
There are some properties calling themselves youth hostels but they tend to be private properties offering one room with a few bunk beds in them.
They are thus not really what we would call a youth hostel but really just private house shares. So below are my 5 favourite accommodation options for backpackers.
(Avenue 64 Building 3317, Cienfuegos)
For those of you planning to stay in Cienfuegos, this hostel is situated in the city of Cienfuegos and like most other hostels in the country, it is a colonial house that has been converted.
Good price, great food and very good hosts (and who are very good at giving advice on the local area).
Martha Guest’s House
(Linea 256 Bajos e/Jel, Havana)
Located in the El Vedado region of Havana, this guesthouse is very popular among tourists.
Martha, whom the place is named after, is another great host (as so many in Cuba are) and includes internet connection and air conditioning (the latter very important in the summers here).
